Commerzbank (ETR:) Aktiengesellschaft (CZB) has decided to increase shareholder participation in the company’s success, following the successful implementation of its ‘Strategy 2024’. The bank’s Board of Managing Directors, after consulting with the Supervisory Board, has updated the Bank’s Capital Return Policy.

The German bank has confirmed a total payout of €3 billion for the period from 2022 to 2024. To achieve this goal, the payout ratio for 2024 is planned to be at least 70%. CEO Manfred Knof stated that this planned increase in the payout ratio reflects their confidence in the bank’s further development.

InvestingPro data shows that Commerzbank has a market cap of 12737.64M USD and is trading at a low P/E ratio of 7.55. The bank’s revenue growth for LTM2023.Q2 stands at 6.04%, indicating a stable financial performance. The bank’s return on assets for LTM2023.Q2 is 0.33%, demonstrating efficient management of its resources.

In addition to dividends, Commerzbank intends to return capital to shareholders through share buy-backs. A prerequisite for a share buy-back is a CET1 ratio of at least 13.5% after distribution, subject to approval from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the German Finance Agency.

InvestingPro Tips suggest that the bank is trading at a low Price / Book multiple and has been profitable over the last twelve months. These insights serve to further highlight the bank’s robust financial health and its potential for growth.

For the years 2025 to 2027, Commerzbank plans a payout ratio above 50%, but not exceeding the net result after AT1 coupons and minorities. This depends on economic development and business opportunities. A dividend will only be issued if the CET1 ratio is at least 250 basis points above the Minimum Regulatory Requirements (MDA) after distribution. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will decide on each dividend payment.

Commerzbank expects increased profitability of its businesses and projects a net return on tangible equity (RoTE) of more than 11% by 2027, given a CET1 ratio of 13.5%. After restructuring successfully, Commerzbank has resumed returning capital to shareholders for the financial year 2022. In total, it has distributed around €370 million via dividends and a first share buy-back, corresponding to a payout ratio of 30%. For the current financial year, the bank aims to increase the payout ratio to 50%.

On November 8, 2023, Commerzbank will present all details of the further developed strategy as well as the concrete measures and targets for the years 2024 to 2027. The full revised Capital Return Policy will soon be available on the Commerzbank website.
