About 83,000 highchairs sold in the U.S. are being recalled due to faulty construction that has led to falls and injuries, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said this week.

The recall involves 17 models of Boon Flair and Boon Flair Elite highchairs manufactured in China and imported by TOMY International Inc. of Oak Brook, Ill. The full list of affected models is on the CPSC site.

According to the recall notice, the “bolts used to secure the seat of the recalled highchair to the pedestal base can become loose and allow the seat to detach, posing a fall hazard.” The notice said that TOMY has learned of 34 instances of the chair separating from the base, leading to 24 falls resulting in 11 injuries, such as bruises and scratching.

“TOMY has learned of 34 instances of the chair separating from the base, leading to 24 falls resulting in 11 injuries, such as bruises and scratching.”

The chairs were sold at such prominent retailers as Amazon.com
AMZN,
-0.62%,
Bed Bath & Beyond
BBBYQ,
+17.69%,
Target
TGT,
-0.78%
(and Target.com) and Walmart.com
WMT,
-0.88%,
among others.

The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the chairs immediately, and to reach out to TOMY for a free repair kit. “Consumers will receive a set of bolts and split and flat washers to repair the recalled highchair,” the CPSC said.

TOMY may be contacted at (866) 725-4407. Consumers may also go to the TOMY website for information and assistance.
