Donald Trump has insisted the US would “definitely” impose tariffs on the EU in the wake of his levies on Canada, Mexico and China.
The US president said on Sunday night that the EU had “really taken advantage of us . . . they don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products”.
“[The] European Union is really out of line,” Trump said. “It’s an atrocity what they’ve done.”
When asked if tariffs would lead to higher prices, Trump said: “We may have short term a little pain, and people understand that.”
Asked if he would impose tariffs on the UK, Trump said “it might happen”.
