In this rapidly evolving environment of digital marketing, I’ve found that staying ahead of the game is the key to success. As search engine optimization (SEO) still holds the title in elevating online visibility and driving organic traffic, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game-changer in the industry.

AI has revolutionized the way we approach our work. As we’re already halfway through 2023, it’s important for us to look into the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead of us in the world of AI and SEO.

I’m the proud owner of a thriving digital marketing and PR agency with a growing team of experts who are in the trenches every day, particularly in the realm of SEO. I have witnessed the rise of generative AI tools (like ChatGPT), and as a result, I’ve noticed user behaviors are evolving more than ever before. Adapting your SEO strategies is crucial to ensure your content ranks higher in search results. Here are some of the top evolutions in the SEO world for 2023, following the emergence of AI in the market.

1. The Use Of Generative AI Tools For SEO

ChatGPT has created waves in the digital marketing industry, causing ripples of excitement. It holds the capability to streamline a marketer’s daily workload by automating tasks such as crafting content marketing strategies, doing keyword research, determining the competition for various keywords and even generating compelling SEO titles. Therefore, I think it’s essential for marketing teams to learn and master AI.

On the other hand, we could also see more “fluff” content getting ranked. With the increased use of AI, more individuals who were previously observing from the sidelines have entered the game.

Using generative AI to entirely write your content isn’t a recommended practice. To truly set yourself apart from the competition, it’s crucial to maintain relevance and find balance when using AI tools. Make sure your content remains laser-focused on specific keywords and maintains an authoritative tone.

2. Google’s 2023 Broad Core Algorithm Update

Google introduced its core update beginning on March 15, 2023, with a focus on content creation. The essence of this update is to prioritize content that is helpful, reliable and created with people in mind, rather than feeding search engines. The update will rank content that its algorithm recognizes as high quality.

It is crucial for marketers to be proactive in monitoring their website’s search rankings, as updates can penalize content that is deemed lower in quality.

3. Search Terms Instead Of Keywords

Start targeting specific search terms rather than generic two-word phrases. The reason behind this is that audiences often aim to save time by minimizing the need for multiple searches and skimming through various websites to find the desired information. This shift can be highly advantageous since users searching for long-tail keywords may demonstrate stronger purchase intent or a greater willingness to take action compared to those searching for broader terms like “web design.”

4. Optimizing Voice Search

The popularity of voice assistants and smart speakers has been rapidly increasing. Studies show that approximately 50% of the U.S. population uses voice search features on a daily basis.

It’s important to note that people tend to ask questions and use more natural language when using voice search. Unlike traditional typed searches, voice queries are often longer and resemble a conversation. To optimize for voice search, make sure to adapt your content to match these conversational patterns and provide clear, concise answers.

5. Users Turning To ChatGPT Instead Of Google

Some people now prefer to ask questions directly to generative AI tools like ChatGPT, rather than relying solely on search engines.

To address this change, I suggest focusing on creating engaging and interactive tools such as calculators, quizzes and other forms of content that provide value and encourage your audience to turn to search engines for further exploration. Additionally, incorporating social proof like user reviews, testimonials and case studies can help build credibility and trust in the information provided by your website.

6. Google’s Update To E-E-A-T

Google has expanded on the concept of E-A-T (expertise, authoritativeness and trust) by adding an additional “E” for experience. Demonstrating firsthand or life experience has become increasingly significant for achieving higher Google Search rankings. Pages that are created by individuals with a wealth of personal experience are often trustworthy and effectively fulfill their intended purpose.

7. Shift To Conversion-Focused SEO

I’ve noticed the key performance indicators (KPIs) of SEO are undergoing a significant transformation, with many placing a stronger focus on conversion-focused metrics. This shift completely changes how we assess the value of SEO and urges us to consider not only driving traffic but also converting it into tangible results.

One effective method is to install conversion tracking codes on your website. These codes enable you to monitor the actions and behaviors of users who arrive at your site through organic search. By analyzing this data, you can evaluate the effectiveness of your SEO strategies in driving conversions and generating revenue.

8. The Importance Of User Experience

When it comes to your SEO strategy, prioritizing user experience is essential. You can achieve this by taking various measures, such as optimizing your website’s page speed to improve performance, implementing responsive design to ensure it works well on different devices and, most importantly, creating top-notch content that is both informative and captivating. To enhance readability, use clear headings, subheadings, bullet points and well-organized paragraphs.

Some Last Words

As the world of SEO continues to rapidly evolve, it is crucial to stay ahead of the game to consistently achieve your goals. The rise of AI has introduced a new layer of complexity, making it more challenging to capture readership and engagement. However, by implementing best practices, you can position your SEO strategy as the most powerful and lucrative channel in your marketing arsenal.
