Valero Energy said the electricity went out on some units over the weekend at its McKee refinery in the Texas panhandle, which led to above-normal gas emissions.
“The refinery experienced a partial power failure that activated Safety Instrumented Systems as designed, which resulted in the management of vent gas in the flare system and excess opacity,” the refinery said in a statement, noting the emissions happened Saturday, lasting nearly 14 hours.
The 200,000-barrel-a-day McKee refinery is located in Sunray, 45 miles north of Amarillo.
