Trump vows to rename Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America’

Donald Trump has vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”, as he lashed out at the US’s southern neighbour as a “very dangerous place”.

Trump’s latest broadside against Mexico came as he spoke to reporters from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida less than two weeks before he will be inaugurated to serve a second term in the White House.

During the press conference, he vowed to “tariff Denmark at a very high level” unless the country gave up control of Greenland.

He also called on Nato members to spend 5 per cent of their GDP on defence, confirming a report in the Financial Times from last month. The move, which would more than double the current target, marks a new challenge to the transatlantic alliance.

The president-elect refused to rule out using force to obtain Greenland or to take control of the Panama Canal.

Asked whether he would exclude the use of military or economic coercion for either objective, he said: “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security . . . We need Greenland for national security reasons.”
